Academic Upgrading (LBS) Leads to a Bright Future

We are proud to offer a follow up story on one of our former Academic Upgrading learners, Lisa Smook.

Lisa completed her upgrading in Academic Upgrading (LBS) and was the recipient of the Hamilton Spectator Adult Learner Award in 2012. Lisa then entered the St. Charles Credit program and obtained her High School Diploma.

Upon completion, Lisa entered Mohawk College for her E.A. certification. Another successful diploma acquired.

Hard work and determination did not stop Lisa there!

Lisa is now at Laurier University. With her Mohawk Diploma Lisa could transfer credits to the Work and Employment Program at Laurier University so that she could obtain her degree in 3 years as opposed to 4 years. This program, once completed, will open the doors to a wonderful career allowing Lisa to work in the Human Resources Management field.

Lisa is enjoying her time at Laurier University. As Lisa says, “The best experience I could have since I improved myself at St. Charles….. In the future, I would be honored if I can be a spokesperson for you and the school, by encouraging others who need our guidance to come forward and make St. Charles the best experience for future education.”

Congratulations, Lisa! Keep up the hard work and please stay in touch!

“Thank you for being a great part of my life.”

By Lisa Smook, a former student in St. Charles Academic Upgrading program, Literacy and Basic Skills

I want to give you an update with my future in education. I will be going back to school in September and entering (I have a smile telling you this) Laurier University. I have applied for the Work and Employment program that will allow me to work in the Human Resource Management field. Also, with my Mohawk diploma, I can transfer credits to the program so it will take me 3 years as opposed to 4 years. This program will open doors for a career.

I am thrilled because I did not realize this was an option for me. I have always been put down by others and it took one person to show me I am not what others say about me and that was my instructor at St. Charles. I was encouraged to move forward and that is what I am planning to do. I would like to thank my instructor for her words when I was a student at St. Charles; she is the best!
